Yoga

Journey to cultivate bliss in body, mind and soul

Let’s first understand what Yoga is and its relevance in our life

In the middle of hustle and bustle of the modern life, our physical and emotional stability declines day by day. There is growing awareness that yoga improves the muscle strength, stamina and bring immune and mental stability. However, that is only the beginning of journey to self-realization. The Sanskrit word “yoga” comes from the word “yuj” which means, “to unite” – union of the individual self with the universal self, commonly referred as “self-realization,” “nirvana,” or “enlightenment.” Prior to this union is the union of body with the mind, and the mind with the self.As mentioned in The Bhagwad Gita – Yoga is a journey of the self, through the self, to the self.

It is learning more about our own self each and every day; accepting who we are and what we are capable of. Unlearning few habits that we picked up along the way and learning to not rush the practice, this journey of the self surprises us with our own hidden ability and at times teaches us humbleness with our limitations.

Realizing this lesson and applying this learning from the mat to our life is yoga.

Yoga is a personal practice; unique for each one of us. It brings up emotions that has been governing our thought process and actions (sometimes unknowingly). Consistent practice of Yogic tools like Pranayama (Breath exercise), Dhyana (Meditation), Mudras (energy seal) helps us to face our challenges with mental and emotional clarity.

This internal transformation that helps us in leading a joyful life in all situations is yoga.

Yoga helps us to be grounded, in connection with our true self. Through practice as we learn more about our self at all levels – physical, mental and spiritual, letting go of perceptions we received or created, we get in tune with our dharma (purpose of life).

This journey to the self by using breath as an anchor to unite our physical, mental and spiritual layers, bringing peace and clarity within is yoga.

Yoga teaches us self-discipline and gives us various tools – asanas (physical postures), pranayama (breath exercise), dhyana (meditation), mudras and bandhas (energy seals) to align our entire system for harmonious function of body, mind and emotions. Regular practice of yoga brings following benefits in one’s life.

Strong, Flexible & Balanced Body

Builds muscle strength that help prevent us from injury and conditions like arthritis, back pain, knee pain, etc. With its holistic approach, this strength comes with flexibility, better posture alignment and balance.

Relief from Anxiety, Stress & Insomnia

By reducing perceived stress and anxiety, yoga modulates stress response systems. With its integrative approach of mind and body, yoga is an effective way to better manage stress and anxiety symptoms. It increases energy levels and improves sleep quality.

Enhanced concentration & creativity

It helps in clearing the distractions in our mind and focus, able to remember things, concentrate, and perform much better. This is when we are able to access to our inner intelligence, the very source of creation.

Improved quality of life

Practicing yoga in combination with healthy lifestyle increases energy level, reduces fatigue, relieves chronic pain and improves overall quality of life. It helps balancing five elements (fire, air, earth, ether, water) in the body leading to peace in body, mind and soul.

My Approach

As Krishnamacharya said “Teach what is appropriate for an individual”, my approach is to teach what is appropriate for my students. I believe that yoga is for every body, it is a balancing act of gradually exploring and enhancing our capabilities while honoring our boundaries, irrespective of the age and limitations.

My teaching is based on traditional hatha yoga, teachings of B.K.S Iyengar and other revered teachers of traditional path of yoga.

Combining asanas (postures) with an emphasis to proper body alignment, breath awareness, my teaching is a varied mix of asanas, breath work, mudras, chakras and self-contemplation to achieve healing benefits at all levels – physical, mental, spiritual.

Many Styles, Many Benefits

Hatha Yoga (Slow paced or Vinyasa). In Hatha flow, we come into the breath and quiet the mind as we find steadiness in asana (postures) and enhance strength and endurance. This style uses a combination of movement, postures and breath to work on strength, flexibility and balance. Slow paced or Vinyasa style, I encourage proper alignment of the body and bring balance, strength, and calmness to the students.

Yin Yoga. It was developed to penetrate deep into connective tissue expanding flexibility and aiding healing while stimulating the nadis or meridians to loosen energetic blockages and increase energy flow. Each pose is held for three to five minutes or longer to achieve the desired benefit.

Gentle Yoga for stress relief. An introduction to yoga’s calming, grounding poses and practices, taught at a relaxed pace. As the student learns to gradually unwind tight joints and tension filled minds in the presence of breath, it cultivates inner focus connecting to and moving through a series of postures.

Restorative Yoga. Restore and strengthen the connection at every level – physical, mental and spiritual. As the name indicates, it is styled for complete relaxation of the body and mind by practicing stillness or gentle movement for extended periods of time. Asanas are held for longer period of time, props fully supporting the body, allowing it to open passively and naturally with no active effort. Deep introspective class that restores energy to the body and calmness to the mind.

Beyond Asanas ~ Meditation & Pranayama

Meditation is a practice where an individual trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness, either to realize some benefit or for the mind to simply acknowledge its content without becoming identified with that content.

Pranayama is the art of connecting with your breath, using your breath (prana) to heal the body, and calm your mind, cultivating balance and focus. Over the course of our lives, whether we are aware of it or not, our breath becomes quick and shallow. In this guided session, breath awareness is cultivated utilizing pranayama techniques (breath exercises) to bring inner harmony.

Guided Meditation. Experience guided meditation using many mindfulness techniques including breath (prana), mantra japa, mudras, chakras and visualization techniques.

Yoga Nidra. It is a powerful, ancient form of guided meditation that induces relaxation and healing of the body, mind and spirit. Yoga nidra is one of the yogic practices of pratyahara, or ‘withdrawal of the mind from the sensory experience’ where awareness is internalized and the body becomes completely relaxed.
